The City of Carthage Planning, Zoning and Historic Preservation Commission is currently reviewing materials provided through a recent grant related to our Historic District. The district was originally established in the 1980s and continues to be one of Carthage’s most visited areas, drawing thousands of tourists each year.
To explore our community’s historic charm firsthand, you can view our Historic Walking Tour and Historic Driving Tour guides here:
• Historic Walking Tour: Downtown Walking Tour Guide
• Historic Driving Tour: Historic Homes Driving Tour Guide
Working alongside city staff, the Commission is evaluating the updated guidelines to ensure they best serve our community and support the preservation of Carthage’s remarkable architectural heritage.
This review is extensive and has already prompted meaningful discussion during the first two work sessions. These meetings are open to the public and will continue into the new year. We appreciate the community’s patience and engagement as this important work moves forward.

🚨 Important Parking Notice 🚨
We have received multiple concerns about cars parking in the street while waiting to pick up children after school. This creates a safety hazard by blocking traffic flow.
To address this, our Street Department will be installing "No Parking" signs. We will also be working with the school to notify parents that street parking will no longer be allowed.
Our goal is to give everyone ample notice and encourage compliance with these new parking rules, so we can avoid the need for enforcement actions like ticketing.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping keep our roads safe! 🚗🚸

Please join us in keeping Mayor Mike Harris' family in your thoughts and prayers at this time. Mayor Harris was a lifelong Carthage resident, graduating from Carthage High School in 1963. He proudly served his country overseas in the United States Air Force. His service did not stop there, serving his community as a council member for 11 years and as mayor for 8 years from 2010-2018.
Mayor Harris will truly be missed by the City of Carthage and our staff.
