Pool

The City of Carthage announces that the Municipal Pool will remain closed for the 2026 season due to the facility not being in a safe condition to operate. While this is disappointing, ensuring the safety of patrons and staff remains the City’s highest priority. This decision was made following careful evaluation of the pool’s current condition with input from Parks and Recreation Staff, Public Works Staff, Carthage Water & Electric Staff and professionals in the electrical and aquatics industry. The electrical panels have deteriorated due to years of exposure to a corrosive environment, and the water pipes have multiple unrepaired leaks that are being assessed along with the facility’s electrical issues. The City continues to communicate with industry professionals to determine the best path forward for bringing the Municipal Pool up to code and restoring safe operations in the future.

To provide alternative aquatic recreation opportunities, the Central Park Wading Pool will expand its availability, opening daily from Memorial Day through August 31 from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. for children ages 10 and under. The facility is free of charge, however those enjoying the wading pool must be in swimwear and accompanied by an adult. The wading pool will be open everyday, weather permitting, for community service, including holidays.

Additionally, through a City of Carthage partnership, the Fair Acres YMCA will offer public access to its aquatic center for a $3 admission fee on Fridays from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., beginning May 29 through August 8, with amenities included, such as locker rooms, spray pad and sauna. Please note that the Fair Acres Family YMCA will be closed July 3 and 4 in observance of the holiday, as well as June 6, and July 25 for scheduled swim meets.

The City appreciates the community’s understanding and patience as it prioritizes safety and continues evaluating options for the historic Municipal Pool. While the pool will remain closed this season, the City remains committed to identifying a responsible path forward for the facility’s future.
