The City of Carthage is proud to be part of the Electrek American Solar Challenge, a premier collegiate competition that brings innovation, sustainability, and engineering excellence to communities across the country.

On Wednesday, July 29, Carthage’s Memorial Hall will serve as the finish location for Stage Two of the American Solar Challenge. The following day, the Boots Court Visitor Center will host the start of Stage Three, welcoming teams as they continue their journey.

“Carthage is honored to be selected as a host community for the Electrek American Solar Challenge,” said Carthage Tourism Director Melissa Little. “Welcoming these teams to Memorial Hall and the Boots Court Visitor Center allows us to showcase not only innovation and sustainability, but also the hospitality and historic significance of our community, especially as we celebrate the Route 66 Centennial.”

The American Solar Challenge (ASC) is a 1,500‑mile road competition in which collegiate teams design, build, and drive solar‑powered vehicles. Alongside the road event, teams must first qualify through the Formula Sun Grand Prix, a track‑based competition that tests vehicle performance and durability. Both events are organized by the Innovators Educational Foundation and represent the highest level of solar vehicle competition for universities.

Qualifying for the American Solar Challenge is extremely competitive. Teams will learn whether they have officially qualified on July 24 at the opening track event in Brainerd, Minnesota, before beginning the 1,500‑mile journey across the country.

The Electrek American Solar Challenge is an America’s 250®‑certified event and will soon also be certified as part of the Route 66 Centennial, further connecting the competition to a nationally significant milestone and the historic Route 66 corridor.

Carthage’s role as a host community places it on a national and international map of sustainability, engineering achievement, and forward‑thinking transportation, connecting cutting‑edge solar technology with one of America’s most iconic highways.

Additional details regarding public viewing opportunities and community engagement will be shared closer to the event dates.
