Carthage city leaders are working to address the condition of bridges throughout the community, with the Oak Street Bridge on historic Route 66 standing out as a key concern.

According to the most recent Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) inspection, the Oak Street Bridge currently carries the lowest weight rating still allowed for it to remain open. These ratings are conducted every two years and determine whether a bridge can safely support traffic.

While the bridge remains open, the City is actively reviewing possible solutions for repair or replacement. The goal, officials say, is to both preserve the bridge’s historic significance along Route 66 and ensure safe passage for residents and travelers alike.

Recognizing the need for a comprehensive approach, the City has formed a Bridge Committee tasked with addressing and prioritizing bridges across Carthage. The committee is also working to navigate challenges related to the Oak Street Bridge’s ownership by the railroad, which adds a layer of complexity to potential improvements.

“Our goal is to do everything legally possible to maintain the bridge while it remains open,” Public Works Director Josiah Bayless said. “We are committed to finding a path forward that preserves the history of Route 66 and provides improvements that will benefit generations to come.”

As plans develop, updates will be shared with the community.
